input/output error lovisborg Jun 27, 2013 1:54 AM hi,we have some problems with a lun. each attemtpt failed to start the virtual machine. module diskearly power on failed. cannot open the disk to start a vm, which use this lun, ends with following exception:Failed to open '/vmfs/volumes/4c5a5ebd-a904712c-0032-001517ce8e38/icg4aida/icg4aida-flat.vmdk' : Input/output errororCannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4c5a5ebd-a904712c-0032-001517ce8e38/icg4aida/temp.vmdk' or one of the snapshot https://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004232 disks it depends on.is there a tool to check the lun and if yes repair it?we tried to remove the lun and reattach it, but we can not remove it,because it is shown as busy.there are also strange things when we want to view the storage in vcenter gui. in the vm we had the storage https://communities.vmware.com/thread/450349?tstart=0 attached to (in the past) we can see it under the devices tab but not in the storage tab. On the other two servers we see the lun in both tabs.we are using esxi4.1 on a intel modular serverhope you can follow my explainations and thanks in advancegruss juergen 7519Views Tags: none (add) This content has been marked as final. All works fine except that the main HD where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the error message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then cannot open the reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details Is it necessarily a hardware problem? If not, is there a way to repair the HD from Ubuntu? windows ntfs share|improve this question edited May 15 at 19:06 muru 69.2k12125176 asked Oct 31 '11 at 15:13 Calixte 68461528 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 17 down vote accepted chkdsk /R is a pretty important command when things get hairy with NTFS. Unfortunately I don't know of a Linux tool that comes close to covering everything it does. In short, to run it, you're going to need some sort of Windows recovery disk. If you don't have one to hand, there's an ISO offered up in a thread on another set of support forums (see the first answer). There are tools like ntfsfix (part of the ntfsprogs package) that can do surface checks on NTFS disks but they don't tend to be able to fix the drives. share|improve this answer answered Oct 31 '11 at 15:24 Oli♦ 173k56436646 3 You could install VirtualBox and an XP on it. Prevent the drive mounting in fstab, (if USB mount: add the USB filter in VBox so that XP sees the "raw" U

Solved Vmware 5.0 Cannot open the disk or one of the snapshots it depends on after many failed snapshots Posted on 2012-10-10 VMware Virtualization Storage Software 1 Verified Solution 31 Comments 4,127 Views Last Modified: 2012-10-12 From the begining . Ml350 G6 server 1TB SAS mirrored drives Upgraded from ESX 4 to ESX 5, all good and working fine Upgraded to newest Vranger software for backup, every back failed, could not get it to run, worked with support but never able to get it right. 2 weeks after upgrade sever is getting slow and crashing, then one of the mirrored drives goes red. I shut down the server and move the entire folder to another set of mirrored drives. I tried to mount the drives but failed, I think it was because it has an issue with one of the snapshots.. So, I edited the VMX file to use the main vmdk instead of -000079vmdk.. Server booted, but would not let me into it, said all usernames were wrong, even local user.. Odd... I could access the shares from another computer but I could see that they were 2 weeks old.. But now my main vmdk has a new content ID so when I try to boot from vmx that looks at 00079.vmdk it fails beause of the content ID issue, so I edited 000001.vmdk to access the new mail vmdk file.. But the server will not boot, I keep getting this error.. Power On virtual machine:Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4db4934c-3fbd9d98-1dc5-1cc1de0231c4/Server.cwt.local/Server.cwt.local-000079.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. See the error stack for details on the cause of this problem. Time: 10/10/2012 5:26:15 AM Target: Server.cwt.local
