What user is the program running as? Does the bak file exist? Can you access it manually? –Pekka 웃 Oct 18 '10 at 14:41 1 Should we assume this is for SQL Server from the file path, since you didn't put the product in the tags or title? –Powerlord Oct 18 '10 at 14:42 I was able to run this query before I reformatted my laptop if it does any help. This is SQL Server 2008 and I am running as an administrator. The bak file does not exist since I am on the process of creating it with this query. –Smiley Oct 18 '10 at 14:45 @Smiley Face: You have to read the SQL file through your local, not network. So it means you will have to move the SQL file from the network to your local drive first, and restore it. –mrjimoy_05 Apr 8 '13 at 8:13 add a comment| 13 Answers 13 active oldest votes up vote 136 down vote accepted Yeah I just scored this one. Look in Windows Services. Start > Administration > Services Find the Service in the list called: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) look for the "Log On As"

on the reproduction of the issue, I changed the parameters and later realized that the backup database command was also failing. If

you rely on the default values for folders that don’t exist, this will raise an error message as shown below. Here is the simple command which I have run: BACKUP DATABASE MASTER TO DISK = 'master.bak' http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3960257/cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5 The command was failing with below error. Here is the text of the message shown in image: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot open backup device ‘E:\InvalidPath\master.bak'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. If you notice the error message is pretty clear. The backup is going to path “E:\InvalidPath” which is an invalid folder on my system. http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2015/01/30/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-state-1-line-1-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-3the-system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/ Important point to note here is that I have NOT given any file path in the command, I have just given file name master.bak.The question is, from where the path is picked? If you have read my previous blog, it’s picked from “BackupDirectory” value in registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQLServerThe highlighted portion might change based on SQL Version and Instance ID. For me it’s MSSQL12 because this is SQL Server 2014 instance. And my instance name is SQL2014:SQL VersionFolder NameSQL Server 2008MSSQL10SQL Server 2008 R2MSSQL10_50SQL Server 2012MSSQL11SQL Server 2014MSSQL12For example, if you have SQL Server 2012 default instance, it would be MSSQL11.MSSQLServer.Here is the registry valueWe can change it via SQL Server Management Studio too. You can right click on server node and go to properties. Then choose “Database Settings” tab.If you want to use T-SQL then here is the script. EXEC xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer', N'BackupDirectory', REG_SZ, N'E:\InvalidPath' GO NOTE: Once you have changed the value, SQL Service restart is needed so that SQL can pick-up changed values. Now that we have seen a couple of examples where using the default values have got us into trouble. As readers, I would like to know if you have got into any errors because of using default values in your coding stints. Let me know via your comments.Reference: Pinal Dave (http

Operating system error 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. The code that I used in SQL Server is as follows (I also tried using the dialog screens and got the same result) RESTORE DATABASE DEX FROM DISK = 'Z:\FULL_BACKUP.bak' WITH MOVE 'Decri' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.mdf', MOVE 'Decri_log' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.LDF' It may be worth noting that the "FULL_BACKUP" is created by the same SQL server, without any issues (so I assume that the server has permissions). Drive Z is a network path, for which there is 'full access' to all domain users. The full backup is 200Gb Drive E (local) has 500Gb free space Any help would be appreciated. sql sql-server sql-server-2008 backup share|improve this question asked Oct 15 '13 at 11:34 SeanAnderson_Fullingdale migrated from stackoverflow.com Oct 15 '13 at 11:46 This question came from our site for professional and enthusias
