The System Cannot Log You On Because The Domain Is Not Available
and im sure we have all come across it before now. Dell 5400 running WinXP Pro SP3, works fine on site on the domain, when the user goes home to logon it should cache the domain. Twice in the past month its given the dreaded error "The system cannot log you on now because the domain * is not available" Its worth adding that he is the only user on this laptop and it has never happened in the 2 years he has had the the domain specified is not available windows 7 laptop. Also we haven't made any changes to the DC (running 2008 R2). Just wondering if anyone has had this issue and if so could you give me some pointers. Thanks! As a backup can you create him as a "local" user too with admin rights, at least he's not dead in the water. 2 Chipotle OP Mike3782 Mar 5, 2012 at 6:24 UTC We make users local administrators on their laptops here as well. 0 Ghost Chili OP da Beast Mar 5, 2012 at 6:27 UTC unplug any (all) network connections - then the OS will use the cached credentials. Chances are he is plugging in a wired network at home, the OS is trying to find your domain via the network connection and can't. 4 Chipotle OP Mike3782 Mar 5, 2012 at 6:33 UTC do you have vpn access setup? 0 Sonora OP PRU9852 Mar 5, 2012 at 7:00 UTC when he is at home, is he just trying to sign into the laptop? or does

As a first step, check the server and then check the clients. The server should be using itself only for DNS and the clients should be using the server only for DNS. Check that the server is registered in DNS with it's internal ip address. share|improve this answer answered Aug 2 '10 at 18:18 joeqwerty 83.5k246121 Thanks, it was a combination of DNS and DHCP. The DHCP wasn't working, so the computers didn't know where the DNS server was. –SLY Oct 19 '10 at 15:22 I had the problem because SBS 2003 only allows 1 DHCP server on a network, and my router was acting as a DHCP server, so the DHCP service would not start on my SBS 2003 server. –SLY Oct 19 '10 at 15:23 Glad to hear that you got it worked out. –joeqwerty Oct 19 '10 at 16:18 ad
