works fine on site on the domain, when the user goes home to logon it should cache the domain. Twice in the past month windows domain not available its given the dreaded error "The system cannot log you on now because the domain * is not available" Its worth adding that he is the only user on this laptop and it has never happened in the 2 years he has

Also make sure that all domain machines use ONLY the domain DNS server on the NIC and not external ones.
