My wife has a Ipad 2 and I have a 4th generation itouch. We can Imessage each other. If I not available for facetime audio error initiate a facetime it works with no problems. If she initiates a facetime, she gets a user not available but I will actually see it for a second or two and then it disappears and says that I missed the message. We are sitting next to each other on the same internet connection and also we use the same apple ID with our own email address'. Any suggestions?
