Currently, I have access to the source code and am able to make any changes required. Randomly throughout the day, usually after some prolonged usage by users, most of my pages start getting an Out of Memory error. The way that the application is built, is all the pages and scripts pull core functions from a Global.asp file. In that file are embeds to other global files as well, but the error presented shows Out Of Memory WhateverScriptYouTriedToRun.asp Line 0 Line 0 is the include for the global.asp file. Once the error occurs, after an unspecified amount of time the error occurence subsides for some time but then begins to reoccur again. With how the application is written, and the functions it uses, and the "diagnostics" I've already done - it seems to be a common used function that is withholding data such as recordset or something of that nature and then not releasing it properly. Other users then try to use the same function and eventually it just fills up causing the error. The only way for me to effectively clear the error is to actually restart IIS, Recycle the App Pool, and Restart the SQL Server Services. Needless to say, myself and my users are getti

I suggest you Turn on and Enable "Failed Request Tracing" http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/565/using-failed-request-tracing-to-troubleshoot-classic-asp-errors/. You can use the FRT to help in resolution of permissions or code problems. We are from time to time been getting "out of memory" and "out of string space" in the httperr. We do not usually see these errors. For the moment we cannot change the application. Is there anything we can do to the IIS config which will help to reduce or stop these errors occurring ? Based on what you've stated in your question, that's the place I'd start with. Otherwise, you've said application pool - I only support Classic ASP code, but can you increase the app pool recycling? share|improve this answer answered Jun 28 '11 at 22:37 James Skemp 5102619 See also stackoverflow.com/questions/93932/… which I'd say backs-up my suggestion of looking into what pages are causing the issues, now that the application is under load. If there's a programming issue, you'll keep running into it until it's fixed. –James Skemp Jun 28 '11 at 22:39 Thanks for your response. We do know both the page that is causing the problem and why the load has gone up (basically 5x as many users were asked to use the application temporarily). However internal controls on change mean that altering the application is not feasible within 48 hours. –glaucon Jun 28 '11 at 22:45 Would you suggest just recycling every x minutes or get involved in setting memory limits ? –glaucon Jun 28 '11 at 22:47 Having now read the stackoverflow question you linked to - yes it is a string concatentaion which was never optimal but which was 'OK' in the context of the original user base - it seems it's now

Memory application pool Reply shados Contributor 7230 Points 2216 Posts Re: Application Pool with Out Of Memory Exception Feb 02, 2010 11:41 AM|shados|LINK Definately, especially if you are running the websites on a 32 bit server (which is unfortunately still common). In 32 bit, your worker process (which you probably only have 1 of by default) is limited to 2 GB of virtual memory. Because of the way IIS layouts its internal components, realistically, you will start seeing out of memory exceptions because of the way .NET allocates large segments of contiguous memory, around 700-800 MB, and it will be pervasive around 1 GB. The problem will show itself sooner if you use large XmlDocument objects or arrays, or any other large value types. The easiest solution for you is to either: A) switch to 64 bit B) optimize your code to use smallerarrays or similarstructures (or objects that use them, like XmlDocument or web services) if that is the problem C) probably easiest short term solutions: put your web applications in different application pool and/or up the amount of worker process on your application pool. I personally like using 1 app pool per major application.
