it encounters this state?. (I appreciate that it should refresh as little as it needs to in normal development to increase performance for human developers.) UPDATE (2012-06-25): My latest update (Version: Indigo Release Build id: 20110615-0604) no longer shows Preferences - General - Workspace - Refresh Automatically There is an option "Refresh on access" - should I use this? eclipse share|improve this question edited May 16 at 12:51 Tom11 1,27041029 asked Dec 3 '10 at 8:34 peter.murray.rust 17.6k2593175 Why do you get the message? You might lose work if not careful. –Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen Dec 3 '10 at 12:10 I get this message always when I search workspace, because the Servers project (in web tools) contains log files which keep updating outside eclipse. Until now I have not found any solution apart from Refresh Automatically, but that gives othe rproblems (specifically: when some Ant build runs, Eclipse will refresh half-way the Ant build and mess things up). –Stijn de Witt Sep 29 '14 at 12:39 perhaps just right lick on the project then select "refresh"? –shanyangqu Mar 30 '15 at 10:48 Silly question: Why is "an extra copy" of a resource obligatory? The error simply says, "you've made changes in files in your workspace from outside eclipse".

The simplest solution would be to select the project and press F5 (Right click -> Refresh). This will re-sync any external changes to the file system and eclipse would now know what http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4343735/avoiding-resource-is-out-of-sync-with-the-filesystem exactly is in your workspace. But it is cumbersome to do this everytime any of your file changes due to external agent. The best way would be to let Eclipse automatically handle any external changes in file system. So that when you compile the code it never gives the error "resource is out of sync with the filesystem". Do do this, select following option: Window -> http://viralpatel.net/blogs/eclipse-resource-is-out-of-sync-with-the-filesystem/ Preferences -> General -> Workspace Now depending on your version of Eclipse you will get either of following options in workspace window. Refresh Automatically Refresh using native hooks or pooling Check out the below screen shot for this option. One thing we should highlight here is that Eclipse uses polling mechanism to check whether there was any change in the filesystem. This might have a performance impact. So choose wisely. Frankly I am using this feature for quite sometime now and I don't see that much of impact. I did 😉 As an eclipse user, occasionally you get greeted with error messages which are tricky to resolve. The error, "Resource ‘X' is out of sync with file out of system" made me scratch my head for a little while - as far as I could tell, it wasn't! As an eclipse user, sooner or later you'll see this. There can be a few causes of this: If you edit any workspace file from outside of eclipse, which is part of your project, this can throw the error. The out of sync same is true of directories - have you renamed/moved/deleted anything? The cause which threw my error was symbolic links. Because I had changed the name of a target directory, this was enough to trigger this error dialog, even though the file name of the symlink itself was unchanged! To prevent this dialog appearing, as far as possible, visit Window > Preferences > General > Workspace and select: Refresh using native hooks or polling Refresh on access Selecting appropriate preferences can keep your workspace up to date and reduce the chance of errors appearing. The combination of ensuring tight controls on renaming files and directories, together with automating detection of this as much as possible, will lead to a smoother experience with this great integrated development environment.
