I've already extracted out the plain text with a modified XML parser written in Java, but need to convert it to a vocab file. In order to do this, I found a perl script that is said to do the job, but lacks instructions on how to execute. Needless to say, I'm a complete newbie to
Perl Catch Out Of Memory Error
Perl and this is the first time I've encountered a need for its usage. When I run this script, I'm getting an Out of Memory Error when using this on a 7.2GB text file on two separate dual core machines with 4GB RAM and runnung Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. When I contacted the author, he said this script ran fine on a MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM, and the total in-memory usage was about 78 MB when executed on a 6.6GB text file with perl 5.12. The author also said that the script reads the input file line by line and creates a hashmap in memory. The script is: #! /usr/bin/perl use FindBin; use lib "$FindBin::Bin"; use strict; require 'english-utils.pl'; ## Create a list of words and their frequencies from an input corpus document ## (format: plain text, words separated by spaces, no sentence separators) ## TODO should words with hyphens be expanded? (e.g. three-dimensional) my %dict; my $min_len = 3; my $min_freq = 1; while (<>) { chomp($_); my @words = split(" ", $_); foreach my $word (@words) { # Check validity against regexp and acceptable use of apostrophe if ((length($word) >= $min_len) && ($word =~ /^[A-Z][A-Z\'-]+$/) && (index($word,"'") < 0 || allow_apostrophe($word))) { $dict{$word}++; } } } # Output words which occur with the $m

I have taken them into 28 arrays. and printing in 28 output files. Each output file contains all the arrays concatenated , http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8128774/resolving-out-of-memory-error-when-executing-perl-script except current file array. After 11 output files, each of about 70 MB size, Out of memory! msg is coming . How to increase the memory limit. What I tried is : I closed each file handler after fetching the data into an array. but no use.... Please suggest solutions. perl share|improve this question asked Nov 23 '12 at 13:01 Nari 3028 5 "How to increase the memory limit." Buy more ram, but this is not the best way to deal with your problem. I'm guessing http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13529703/out-of-memory-perl it's the way you are generating your output; could you show the code for that please –beresfordt Nov 23 '12 at 13:20 2 You're probably hitting against the 2GB or 3GB of available address space a 32-bit process has. Why you'd hit that with the numbers you gave is rather mysterious. You could increase the available address space by using a 64-bit build of Perl, but that's probably not the way to go in this case. –ikegami Nov 23 '12 at 13:46 2 If you're not doing heavy calculations with the data, just open a file, read it, print it to the new file while reading it, close it, open the next one, repeat, close the output, and so on. Only put the data in a lexical scope inside the reading loop. That will take a lot longer, but safe the memory problem. –simbabque Nov 23 '12 at 14:00 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 7 down vote accepted Assuming that you have four files A B C D, you then want to create four files so that File 1 contains B C D, File 2 contains A C D, File 3 contains A B D, and File 4 contains A B C. What you are currently doing is loading every file into an array (just using strings would spare a little memory), and then printing each output file consecutively. You could also open all output files, then open each input file in sequence and print it to every non-corresponding output fil

From my understanding, Perl doesn't have imposed memory limits like PHP, and yet we are continuously getting internal server errors when attempting to do the import. When investigating the error out of memory logs, we see that the script ran out of memory. Since perl doesn't have a setting to limit the memory usage (as far as I can tell) why are we getting these errors? I doubt a small import like this is consuming 48GB of ram. We have compromised and split the list into chunks of 10,000, but would like to figure out the root cause for future fixes. This is a CentOS machine with Litespeed as the web server. perl share|improve this question asked Feb 29 '12 at 20:41 Kevin 257313 2 Silly question - 64bit OS or PAE? When you run "top" how much RAM does perl consume? –Tom Newton Feb 29 '12 at 20:45 Sorry - new to debugging and wasn't sure what info was relevant. 64 bit OS and perl doesn't even show up in top. mail.cgi (The script being used) does show up and is using 25% CPU and .3% ram before the error occurs. –Kevin Feb 29 '12 at 21:54 What is the error you are getting? How do you know its running out of memory? –Patrick Mar 22 '12 at 22:44 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote It's hard to debug without seeing cod

The Script works fine as long as attachments of a bigger size are not imported. The customer installed a standard Perl package (5.8.6) on the AIX machine. Subsequently he no longer uses the command 'ratlperl' as it is noted in the IBM Rational Perl interface documentation. Instead he starts a script with the command: /usr/bin/perl/perl -w submit_anwr_rzhs071_import.pl after setting the variable export PERL5LIB=/continuus/change/cs52_BIENE/jetty/webapps/change/WEB-I NF/perl/lib/perl5/5.8.6:/continuus/change/cs52_BIENE/jetty/webap ps/change/WEB-INF/perl/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6. Thereafter he doesn't get an 'out of memory error' any more. Something must be wrong with the Perl installation package provided by IBM Rational. The customers perl scripts are attached.
