into the config.sys file. SHELL=X:\PATH\COMMAND.COM /P /E:NNNN X:\PATH\ is the path to where the command.com is located on the computer./E:NNNN can be any number from 512 to 1024. It is recommended that you only utilize 512; this is because the more environment space used, the less amount of conventional memory will be available. Alternatively, as mentioned above, you can do any of the below recommendations to increase the amount of environment space. Decrease the path statement. If special prompt is defined, remove or slim down the prompt statement. Remove any lines from the autoexec.bat and config.sys that may not be needed. Including any switches after commands that are not needed. Additional information See our autoexec.bat and config.sys pages for further information and related links. Was this page useful? For many years I have been happily running an old program called Gramcord on my Win XP machines ( 1x XP Home, 1 x XP Pro.) When I shifted Gramcord from my old Win 98 machine to the XP machines, it https://discussions.apple.com/thread/625131?start=0&tstart=0 installed and ran without a hitch. However, I got a new computer last week, and have been re-installing my trusty programs. It is an XP Pro machine ( I'm not sold on Vista yet). Gramcord now will not run. I get the error message "Out out of of Environment Space". The Gramcord website offers a fix for this problem - it seems to be quite common - but the fix has not worked for me. It makes no difference at all. I have googled the problem, and the issue of running out of environment space is mentioned on a few boards, but the solutions offered are too technical for me to understand. I am not a buffoon when it comes to computers, but I do need things explained clearly, especially when it comes to dos-based commands. Can anyone out of environment help me fix this? And in simple language? pabailie, May 23, 2008 #1 Sponsor pabailie Thread Starter Joined: Apr 17, 2004 Messages: 29 I shall give it a go and report back tomorrow. I appreciate your help. Thanks. I got the solution from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230205 It's meant for Windows 95 but I think it should work for you as well. zabusant, May 23, 2008 #3 pabailie Thread Starter Joined: Apr 17, 2004 Messages: 29 I have tried the fix suggested, but when I try run > sysedit I get 4 dialog boxes appearing, and the config.sys box - the one I am meant to edit - is completely blank. So I have no idea what to do there. I tried another approach, which also seems not to work. Control Panel > system > advanced > environment variables ... editing the com spec line so that it includes /E:4096 /P does not do anything; but then I am not sure if this is the correct line to edit, or if I should be adding in a separate line or what. But I reckon that must be the place to fix environment space. Another question - I hope that this doesn't merit a separate thread... I was wondering if this brand new machine of mine might have a bad installation of XP Pro? I have attempted to install another old program without success, but this time I am getting an error message to say t

It displayed "error 2009: Not enough space for environment."While troubleshooting I discovered significant additions to the DOS Environment Variables. The PATH exceeded 127 bytes. Also added were CLASSPATH and QTJava, each with long path names. After deleting the following my DOS program functioned again:CLASSPATH=.;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zipQTJava=C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zipand this portion at the end of the PATH statement:C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\Can QuickTime ver. 7.1 function properly without these DOS environment variables? If not, how can I increase the environment space in cmd.exe to accommodate both the needs of QuickTime 7.1 and my DOS program?M927 Windows XP Pro Posted on Sep 2, 2006 7:54 PM I have this question too This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
