Composite Gamut Error
An Annoying Spec that Broadcast Colorists Must Adhere To Imagine this: You've color out of gamut warning illustrator graded an hour of programing for a big name network or production company. You've worked your butt off making fabulous grades gamut errors and of course making sure that the video signal - since this is a broadcast show - was perfectly legal. As you graded you made sure the signal wasn't too bright or dark, and

that saturation was in check. Maybe you even used a ‘broadcast safe' filter or effect somewhere in your pipeline to just catch any stray illegal pixels. You did fantastic work, and the client is exceedingly happy! You render the show, ship it off for delivery and go have a pint rewarding yourself for a job well done. The following week your client calls (you're thinking victory lap!) and tells

you that there have been some things flagged in QC. Not one to worry, you ask them to send the QC report over as you're confident most of the issues are probably audio problems or something else that's not really your concern. As you scan down the report there they are - they almost jump off the page - RGB GAMUT ERROR (HIGH, RED) 01:13:23:18, there is another one RGB GAMUT ERROR (LOW,BLUE) 01:14:36:18! Dang!!! Has this ever happened to you? We've talked quite a bit in MailBag episodes and at conferences Team Mixing Light has spoken at about RGB gamut errors. These pesky QC flags can be infuriating, and ultimately feared, as they can be hard to clear up if you're not sure exactly what they are and how to go about fixing them. The first thing to understand about RGB Gamut Errors? Every broadcast colorist has been there! You're not a bad colorist! Trust me, depending on the network and QC engineer, RGB gamut errors might not even be anything the eye can see - but only an automated alarm on a set of scopes can! In this Insight, which is Part 1 of a two part series on RGB gamut errors, I want to take a closer look

Re: out of gamut warning rob day Apr 10, 2012 4:35 PM (in response to cmp7112) If you make an RGB or Lab swatch that is out-of-gamut to your document's CMYK space an out-of-gamut warning shows in the swatch dialog. When you use the color it will stay in the RGB gamut unchanged as long as you don't have transparency anywhere on the page with the default CMYK Transparency Blend mode selected, or you don't have Overprint/Separation Preview turned on:No transparency, Overprint Preview off.a transparent object on the page with a CMYK Transparency Blend space 1 person found this helpful Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions 3. Angeles, CA Hi, Got it on a Leader LV 5700A HD-SDI scope yesterday - as a chroma gamut alarm. http://www.liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php?threads/can-you-explain-this-gamut-error.5888/ This is a specific frame that repeatedly and reliably generated the alarm. http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/24716/how-to-use-all-colors-in-illustrator-remove-out-of-gamut-checking The threshold levels were set to -20% and 120%, although they may have been set as far as -40% and 135%. Either way, the Cb/Cr excursion looks barely 30% (this is with the intensity turned up) so I was left pondering. Unfortunately that scope doesn't have a diamond display or out of other methods to evaluate chroma gamut. Needless to say, there was nothing visually noticeable on the monitor. And while we're on the topic: How do Rec.709 YCbCr percentages, Leader above/below 50 scale, analog IRE, and mV values all correlate when it comes to chroma gamut? Marc Wielage, Dec 12, 2015 #2 Drew Lahat Message Count: 13 Location: Los Angeles, CA Are you referring to the 1080i/59.94? It was a 1080p29.97 project, Blackmagic Mini Monitor SDI out directly into the scope. Could be that it was set to PsF and the scope saw it as i, I presume. Drew Lahat, Dec 13, 2015 #3 Marc Wielage Message Count: 5,376 This looks like a YUV/RGB problem, or a YPbPr issue. Wrong format. Frame rate has nothing to do with it. Marc Wielage, Dec 13, 2015 #4 Drew Lahat Message Count: 13 Location: Los Angeles, CA I suppose you meant YCbCr since YPbPr is analog. And what are you seeing that I'm missing? YCbCr is what it should be. Drew Lahat, Dec 13, 2015 #5 Marc Wielage Message Count: 5,376 Drew Lahat said: ↑ I suppose you meant YCbCr since YPbPr is analog. And what are you seeing that I'm missing? If I press "fix" or something, it makes color black but not blue. I don't need this "service". How to bother out such things as "gamuts" and that similar staff? I want each object be the color I want, not somebody regard as "correct". adobe-illustrator gamut share|improve this question asked Nov 17 '13 at 2:45 Suzan Cioc 3344714 2 What is the document color mode?
