The same kind of project? How big is your workspace? Lots of projects? –djna Jul 25 '11 at 12:41 how much ram do you have? You should have at least 4GB of RAM to make Eclipse runs smoothly. –ysrb Jul 25 '11 at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6816234/out-of-memory-error-in-eclipse-why 12:42 2 Having even 400GB of RAM wouldn't help if the heap setting was too small. –djna Jul 25 '11 at 13:05 Had similar issues when doing an update to indigo. @alexblum's answer worked for me. –TJB Oct 24 '12 at 8:03 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 21 down vote Try to start eclipse with follow paramenters: eclipse.exe -vmargs -Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m Or justify these parameters for your requirements share|improve this answer answered Jul 25 '11 at 12:42 alexblum 1,557712 3 See stackoverflow.com/a/101995/632951 for explanation regarding each parameter. –Pacerier May 10 '14 at 8:16 add a comment| up vote 3 down vote The most obvious explanation is that you are truly out of memory. In which case starting Eclipse with a bigger heap should help -vmargs -Xmx256M varying the 256M to see what works for you. I would not expect to see this problem if you have just a few simple projects. If you are using additional plugins then conceivably the amount of heap you need may need to be increased. share|improve this answer answered Jul 25 '11 at 12:42 djna 42.4k85383 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Not sure if relevant to your problem, but I just had a similar problem with a Swing project using OpenJDK 7. Is garbage collection happening too fast? Eclipse is consuming lots of CPU or Memory resource? In my case, while running Eclipse project, I recently got out of memory Out Of Memory (OOM) error. There are some simple tuning required in order to fix it. Below hack worked for me. Tuning Eclipse Performance and Avoiding OutOfMemory Exceptions Go to your Eclipse setup folder If you are running Eclipse on Mac OS X then Right click on eclipse.app icon Click on Show Package Contents Open eclipse.ini file Change below parameters -Xms512m -Xmx3000m (Hoping your developer box has >4GB of memory) Add below parameters -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m Also, if you are running Eclipse from command prompt, use below parameters: 123456 C:\Program Files\eclipse\eclipse.exe-vmargs-Xmx1800m-Xms512m-XX:PermSize=256m-XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:PermSize specifies the initial size that will be allocated during startup of the JVM. If necessary, the JVM will allocate up to -XX:MaxPermSize.
