I'm doing cartesian joins with 38,000 records (x 38,000 so yes the resulting set is HUGE). I will be setting my options to CLEANUP so the ongoing space is cleaned up. My main question is: how do I even go about getting a dedicated server (UNIX) for my home business? I checked out Dell servers, some of 8GB of RAM but is that enough to crunch these kind of #s? I deal with a LOT of data and need maximum processing power. I'm not sure I want to spend the $ on the SAS server either (performance scalable

I'm trying to https://www.ciser.cornell.edu/FAQ/SAS/Sort_Large.shtml sort a very large SAS dataset (4.49G) and I'm getting the message that http://www.okstate.edu/sas/v8/sashtml/cms/zsf-work.htm SAS is "out of resources". What can I do? A. Here are some helpful tips passed along to us from other users as well as from SAS: From an experienced user: You can better diagnose where you're running into resource problems by setting a couple of system options: MSGLEVEL=i and FULLSTIMER. You need out of to determine whether you're running out of RAM or disk space. Its often the latter. With regard to memory -- if, for example, you have 750M RAM, try setting the MEMSIZE option to 700M and the SORTSIZE option to 650M. You need to leave enough room for the operating system & for SAS overhead. *** Make sure you're not running any other processes ***. About disk out of resources space -- A common cause of problems! If you are sorting a temporary (WORK) data set, you need to have room for ***4 copies*** of the dataset in your WORK library (for Windows, 5 if you are using Unix). If you're sorting a permanent dataset (two level name), you need room for 1 copy in the source library, 1 in the destination, and 2 in WORK. Some more tricks - Make your data set smaller: eliminate all unnecesary variables and set the LENGTH of variables to be no more than necessary (e.g., 3 for dummy variables, 4 for integers, etc,). these reduce the size of the file to be sorted dramatically & should always be done (if you haven't already). since you only have 1.7 million records but the file is 4.5 GB, i'm guessing you might not have done this yet (or else the file is inherently very wide -- see below). with data files of this size you need to think hard about how to reduce file size. Try sorting subsets of the data & recombining them -- If the file is very 'wide', split it into multiple files which all contain the sort
PROC FREQ step with a complex TABLES statement that you run against a large SAS data set), you may run out of space in the WORK library. If you run out of space in batch mode, your PROC or DATA step terminates prematurely, and SAS issues a message similar to the following: Log ERROR: Insufficient space in file WORK.TEMP.DATA. NOTE: The SAS System stopped processing this step because of errors. WARNING: The data set WORK.TEMP may be incomplete. When this step was stopped there were 117 observations and 3 variables. WARNING: Data set WORK.TEMP was not replaced because this step was stopped. In an interactive session, a dialog window asks you to specify what action to take. Here are several possible solutions to this problem: Delete files to free space. Delete SAS data sets and members from any SAS library that resides on the same minidisk as the WORK library, including members of the WORK library itself. If the WORK library is in an SFS directory, deleting SAS data sets and members of any SAS library in the same userid and file pool as the WORK library will free additional space for the WORK library. See Deleting Temporary SAS Data Sets for more information. Remove unneeded CMS files from the minidisk where your WORK library resides. If the WORK library resides in an SFS directory, removing any CMS files from the same userid and file pool as the WORK library will free additional WORK library space. Define a virtual disk or a temporary disk for your WORK library. Point WORK or USER to the virtual disk or to the temporary disk. See Directing Temporary SAS Data Sets to the USER Library for more information. Ask your systems administrator to increase the allocation of the minidisk where the WORK library resides or to increase the limits for your userid in the SFS pool where your WORK library resides. See Increasing the Size of the WORK Library for more information. Increasing the Size of the WORK Library By default, SAS creates the WORK library on the CMS minidisk that has the largest amount of READ/WRITE (R/W) space available. You may also want to access a minidisk and reserve it exclusively for SAS WORK files. Use the SAS system option SIODISK= to tell SAS which filemode or SFS directory to use for the WORK library. (See SIODISK=.) Deleting Temporary SAS Data Sets Under CMS, temporary SAS data set means a data set that is stored in a tempora
