The server has 2GB of RAM and no swap. Intermittently Postgres will start getting "out of memory" errors on some SELECTs, and will continue doing so until I restart Postgres or some of the clients that are connected to it. What's weird is that when this happens, free still reports over 500MB http://stackoverflow.com/questions/29485644/postgres-gets-out-of-memory-errors-despite-having-plenty-of-free-memory of free memory. select version();: PostgreSQL 9.1.15 on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, compiled by gcc (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) 4.6.3, 64-bit uname -a: Linux db 3.2.0-23-virtual #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 22:29:03 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Postgresql.conf (everything else is commented out/default): max_connections = 100 shared_buffers = 500MB work_mem = 2000kB maintenance_work_mem = 128MB wal_buffers = 16MB checkpoint_segments = 32 checkpoint_completion_target = 0.9 random_page_cost = 2.0 effective_cache_size = 1000MB default_statistics_target = 100 log_temp_files = 0 I got these values from pgtune (I chose "mixed type of applications") and have been fiddling with them based on what I've read, without making much real progress. At the moment there's 68 connections, which is a typical number (I'm not using pgbouncer or any other connection poolers yet). /etc/sysctl.conf: kernel.shmmax=1050451968 kernel.shmall=256458 vm.overcommit_ratio=100 vm.overcommit_memory=2 I first changed overcommit_memory to 2 about a fortnight ago after the OOM killer killed the Postgres server. Prior to that the server had been running fine for a long time. The errors I get now are less catastrophic but much more annoying because they are much more frequent. I haven't had much luck pinpointing the first event that causes postgres to run "out of memory" - it seems to be different each time. The m

I'm trying to populate this column using the following statement: UPDATE suborganization SET id_organization = organization.id_organization FROM organization WHERE suborganization.prod_id = organization.prod_id; However, Postgres is producing the following error message and out of memory failing to populate the foreign key: ERROR: out of memory DETAIL: Failed on request of size 8 These are large tables, approximately 200 million rows but I'm running it on a machine with 62.8GB of RAM and work_mem set to 4MB. Can anyone explain why I'm getting this error message? Is it simply a hardware issue or do I need to reconfigure postgres? Or is it my method that is flawed, is there a better way to create this foreign key? It could be that you are updating the same target rows repeatedly. 2) always add a WHERE suborganisation.id_organization <> organization.id_organization clause to update-queries to avoid same valued updates. –wildplasser Jun 5 at 13:30 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote This is caused by the on update cascade option which is essentially done through an "after" trigger. The list of rows for which the trigger needs to be fired is kept in memory and that is what is eating up the memory. Try removing the cascade options for the FK constraint. Or do the upd
from DonorsChoose.org with the need of “a serious Postgres expert” to solve the problem they have been experiencing and blocker for number of projects at hand. They heard good things about OmniTI from technology clubs and communities in NYC. DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on their site, and you can give any amount to the project that most inspires you. This year, in beginning of July , they migrated Postgres database server from virtual hardware to high capacity bare-metal server and upgraded their databases from Postgres 8.2 to Postgres 9.2. As everyone hope after upgrade, website was much faster in response time and they should be happy after upgrading their database to Postgres 9.2. That is the case for them as well Yes, they are happy Postgres user except some of the queries used to run without any issue are causing Out of Memory errors now ! Sometimes, the queries were causing segmentation fault by Signal 11 Weird, right ? Here is the email received that describes the problem: We’ve been happy Pg users for years now and have a pretty good command of what’s going on. We recently upgraded to 9.2.x and moved onto new hardware at the same time. Everything’s screaming fast as we’d hoped and working well, but… Now our most-intensive queries are failing with an “out of memorySQL state: 53200″ error. Not in production mind you, these are long-running queries we execute manually against a slave to infrequently do big exports. On our old Pg version 8.2.x and much skimpier hardware, the job would take forever but complete, which was fine for the purpose. Now it’s on newer software with much more memory and CPU, but failing to complete. It seems to be failing on reports that use temporary tables that weren’t analyzed, and large queries during “hash join” and “merge join” operations. We’ve surely got something configured wrong, but we’ve been banging our heads against the wall and are out of ideas, eg. we’ve tried cranking work_mem way up, disabling hashjoin, no dice. We requested to have conference call to get more details but we couldn’t able to attend conference call next day because of next day scheduled visit to NYC . When we mentioned that we are visiting NYC tomorrow, they requested us, if we could stop by their
