bad, the RAID controller should flush its cache, and revert to write through mode, dell poweredge r710 raid controller battery instead of write back (if it is was configured with write back). Write through is a bit slower than write back, dell poweredge r610 raid controller battery replacement as the data must be written to disk completely, before the controller ack the request. We have had two PE2950 with bad ROMB battery. If the server is still under warranty, call Dell support at

1-800-945-3355 to get replacement. If you are comfortable you can do it by yourself (Dell will send part), or if you want you can ask for a tech to install it for you. It is pretty easy to replace the battery, as it is located right on top of your hard drives bay. On 7/21/07, Andrew Hall

Dell Poweredge 2900 Raid Battery
PE2950 showing error on it's front display WD1228 Romb Batt , it started showing this error from yesterday. I have googled it perc 5/i battery and found this error is about Bad battery of RAID Card. Do I need to replace this battery immediately or there could also be another reason to throw this error? I also have read that Firmware/Driver Version http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-poweredge/2007-July/032196.html of PERC 5/i is also responsible for battery status and it should also be updated. In OMSA it also show outdated version of firmaware. If this is could be the reason then how can i safely update firmware version? I need your help from you experts so i can fix these two issues safely. Since it is file server in running environment. OMSA Screenshots: Please guide. I know someone who didn't replace thinking it was a red herring and he lost all of his raid configuration. Don't Delay Replace Today. The battery isn't that expensive. 0 Serrano OP Cleggy1981 Apr 1, 2014 at 10:17 UTC The firmware issue is either the PERC firmware (update from Dell support site) or a Microsoft STOR driver update (hotfix on request from Microsoft). If you click the link Firmware/Driver versions it will detail which one it is. The Microsoft STOR drivers from memory were KB950903 and KB943545, you get this flagged from OMSA with Windows Server 2003/2003R2 as the OS 0 Serrano OP Cleggy1981 Apr 1, 2014 at 12:24 UTC This should sort the PERC 5/i firmware out http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=X83RY 0 Anaheim OP MSLearner Apr 1, 2014 at 12:28 UTC Thank you for replies...What does mean by these terms? I believe this means that the RAID controller card battery is nearly dead. The question that I have is what happens when the battery runs flat? Will the server stop working? Can it cause damage? Should the server be shut down? need to know as we're nearly at the end of business on a Friday afternoon and it'll be impossible to get a replacement immediately. dell-poweredge share|improve this question asked Mar 9 '12 at 12:59 Istari 2122510 add a comment| 5 Answers raid controller battery 5 active oldest votes up vote 12 down vote accepted You may end up with a singularity forming in your server closet if you don't replace it. Just kidding. What happens is the PERC controller will stop caching data and your disk performance may drop. That way if there's a power outage, it should prevent you from losing data (or minimize the chances of losing data. It shouldn't cause any immediate issues if you have to wait a few days to get the new battery. You turn off the server, replace the battery as per the documentation, and power it back up. The server will run fine until you get it replaced. share|improve this answer answered Mar 9 '12 at 13:06 Bart Silverstrim 28.7k94979 1 Thanks to all who answered. Accepted this one for the singularity –Istari Mar 9 '12 at 13:21 add a comment| up vote 3 down vote The battery is degrading, though it isn't dead yet. When it does die, the biggest impact is that the write-cache on your RAID card will be disabled. This will have potentially significant performance impacts, but will not affect stability. You have time to plan for a replacement-outage. share|improve this answer answered Mar 9 '12 at 13:03 sysadmin1138♦ 99.6k14124253 add a comment| up vote 2 down vote When the battery dies, it will just turn off the battery backed write cache. This could hurt performance a bit, but shouldn't be a huge deal to run like this in the short term
