attachment from OS calendaring & scheduling; c&s; ics file; icalendar; ical; meeting invitation; appointment; calendar entry; ND6; ical format Technote (FAQ) Question A customer attempts to load an ICS attachment (iCalendar format) from the operating http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21249723 system (OS) by double-clicking it, and expecting the Lotus Notes client to convert it to a Calendar entry. However, the following error message appears: "Invalid directory or device not ready". Answer Opening ICS attachments directly from the OS http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21170838 is not supported in Notes/Domino. The intended use is to drag and drop the ICS attachment onto the Calendar. Steps to reproduce issue: 1. Save an iCalendar invitation as an ICS attachment at the operating system. 2. Right-click it, select 'Open With' and then select "Notes". The error "Invalid directory or device not ready" occurs. Typo3 based Intranet of one of our customers also allows the users to search Notes http://www.domblog.de/domblog.nsf/d6plinks/JPOR-7BXF6M databases. The search is performed on the server using PHP code https://www.activeweb.fr/site/web.nsf/Pages/News20100871 which calls a Notes agent using a HTTP request. The agent returns JSON code which then is processed in PHP and output to the user. The JSON code contains a NotesURL link to the source document allowing to open it in the notes error Notes client. This works quite well if the fully qualified server name only consists of a common name (CN) part and an organization (O) part (e.g. "Server/Organization") resulting in NotesURLs like Notes://Server@Organization/__49257109002BAF0A.nsf/0/1211974AA0201B51492571090031ACE3?OpenDocument But if the server name contains additional organizational unit (OU) or country (C) parts (e.g. "Server/Department/Organization"), the Notes URL will look something notes error invalid like this: Notes://Server@Department@Organization/__49257109002BAF0A.nsf/0/1211974AA0201B51492571090031ACE3?OpenDocument When this URL is opened using a web browser and Notes 6 or 7 is installed it will result in an error "invalid directory name or device not ready". The reason is that the server name contains more than one @. This bug is documented and has been resolved in Notes 8. As a workaround I have written a short function which will parse a NotesURL and strip the server name down to the CN which should work under normal circumstances. Here's the function: Function stripNotesURL(strNotesURL As String) As String '/** ' * This function strips the server name in strNotesURL down to the CN. ' * The reason is that server names consisting of more than just the CN and O part cannot be opened from a web browser using a Notes 6 or 7 client. ' * (Error: "Invalid directory name or device not ready.") ' * Example: ' * IN: notes://Server1@OrgUnit@Organization/C1256FDAXX30C241/4ZZZF2D59191068980256C3AXX5AF973/C263E1C217557CXXC1256FDA004F5869

This was distracting to the user as it would interrupt his/her work and force the user to dismiss the alarm dialog. Related to spr FJFJ7ZPCFZ for the Mac also fixed in 8.5.1 FP4. SPR# BHUY7V4HPA - Fixed an intermittent problem where Notes would crash while it was loading a corrupted image. (Technote #1397741) SPR# BRIS5PBPGW - Prior to this fix, a non reproducable crash was observed with stack pointing to access violation in 'CLineStore::Compare'. SPR# GKYU7JAM2M - When using the Open button in Notes to open the Calendar, Mail, Workspace etc. the warning: "Invalid directory name or device not ready" is display. If the application is opened using the buttons in the Home page then the error is not displayed. With this fix, added double quotes around path to notes.exe in the appropriate Shell open registry entries.(Technote #1433734) SPR# JMIL83KQ7D - Smart Upgrade enhancement to call nsd -kill if nnotes.dll still being accessed after 1 minute. SPR# MCHZ7TGLEB - Fixed an intermittent problem where text that should be placed in the body of a memo was placed in the To field. (Technote #1396895) SPR# NRBY83NPBC - This fix saves the domain of an iCalendar chair whose Notes address is resolved by the recipient's mail server, if that domain was different than the server's domain (in ChairDomain).
