I cant even render the sequence totally, i.e. there are a lot of sections where the render indicator at the top is not totally grey and still has the slightly different "FUll" status colour. WHen I java.sql.sqlexception: general error try to render them out, i get a notice saying that I am out of space for rendering, and to use render manager. But I have 170 gig free on my drive, so that shouldnt be a problem... What about rendering out ina different codec, does that work? What are your sequence settings? Only an Aiff. I am using an external which has been selected as scratch, it has around 160 gig free. It doesn’t happen enough for me to ever remember exactly what causes it. It could be several things but usually it’s because of a piece of corrupted media. Here are the steps I take when trying to tackle the Final Cut Pro General Error. See if it is happening during a render. To be safe clear out the Render Cache. Do this by going to Tools-> Render Manager. Find your sequence and check Remove next to your audio and video render files, then select Ok. Now when you re render your sequence don’t do it all at once, instead render it in small chucks. Do this until you get the General Error. Then you can see what group of clips or clip is causing the problem. If you find it to be a image you need to resave the image out with Photoshop or a similar program. Same applies with

In fact the the solution is really simple! I had the following sequence setting, when I first tried to render and the following error message came up: Wrong setting: SOLUTION: I've changed final cut the setting a little bit: H.264 to "Apple ProRes 422" - and that's it!!! Right setting: THAT'S ALL! If you want to know which ProRes codec is the best for your project, please have a look at http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio And if you don't know how to change the video settings of a sequence: Right click on it and choose "Settings"! The timeline has an Aspect Radio of HDTV (1080i) (16:9), a pixel aspect ratio of Square, and the compressor is Motion JPEG A. When I try to export it to Quicktime DV Anamorphic NTSC 48 khz I always get a General Error. I tried making up a new timeline, checking my scratch discs have enough space (they do) and even trying other settings, always get the same error. There's no transition or speed up or anything else where is always craps out...any ideas? Have you gone back through and checked the available scratch disc space? FCP uses that space to temporarily buffer what it writes, if the scratch disc is the same that the media files and project are on, it could be the problem. Also, have you tried selecting the timeline again, and making sure to render all video? Sometimes a render file becomes corrupt ( bad spot on disc, general file disc corruption) and sometimes re-rendering will fix everything, or at least, point to where the problem lies. Last, have you tried copying everything out, putting it in a new project file, saving that, and trying the render out, after saving the new project file, and then restarting the iMac?
