It has one of the least helpful warning dialogs and is frustratingly difficult to solve. However, I've learned that when a General Error occurs it is almost always related to a bad clip, or a bad render file, in your sequence. Maybe not always, but this should be the first place to check.General Errors most often relate to render problems; either when you are rendering directly during editing, or rendering as part of https://www.macprovideo.com/forum/video/final-cut-pro/2367 an export. While there isn't a fast way to fix this, it can be fixed. Before you attempt to fix a General Error, it doesn't hurt to reset your system by doing a Safe Boot.NOTE: Here's an article that explains how to do a Safe Boot: Trouble-Shoot in Five StepsTHINGS TO CHECK1. While Final Cut SHOULD be able to work with video of different frame rates, it can often have problems when a clip https://larryjordan.com/articles/fcp7-general-error/ with a faster frame rate (say, 30 fps) is put into a slower sequence (say, 23.98 fps). Disable clips with different frame rates and see if the General Error goes away when you render.NOTE: To disable a clip, select it and type Control+B. A clip changes color when it is disabled.2. It is possible that a specific render file became corrupted. This isn't your fault, every so often it just happens. Delete all render files and see if the error goes away.NOTE: To delete all render files associated with a track, turn off the green visibility light, located in the track header on the left of the Timeline, then turn it back on. This is just a quick click - click. If you don't turn the visibility light back on, all clips in that track become invisible.3. Sometimes clips downloaded from stock image houses are corrupted during the transfer. Disable any stock shots (select the clip and type Control+B) and re-render.4. If these first three suggestions don't work, you will need to get a bit more methodical by rendering your project in sections until you finally isolate the clip(s) that is causing a problem. To render just a portion of your sequence, select roughly 10% of your clips and render. If that works, SAVE YOUR PROJECT, then render the next 10%. (Saving y
davelegacy I've been schooled....my Final Cut Pro project will not open....a project that is extremely important to the client...and I have not yet told them of my delima. I attempted to open the project file and after about 10% of loading suddenly a message comes http://www.kenstone.net/discussions/read.php?3,5805,5814 up, "General error 41". Can anyone tell me the bad news about this? Can there be good news? If so, see if you can open a previous version? Do you have any large still images in the project? How big is the project file? --ken Reply Quote Re: Final Cut project file won't open: General error final cut 41 message (November 14, 2008 02:22AM) davelegacy In my first attempts to open the project a box came up saying that 'firefighting.avi' needs to be changed, use the media manager' or something like that....and then the 'general error 41' came up This particular clip I recently got from aFootage Firm DVD, a free disc with some useful clips. I liked one of the clips so I brought it into the project and actually slo-moed a couple of seconds of it. That just may have been final cut pro the culprit. This project has many Motion files, mostly simple text, but one I did some heavy effects with a video clip.....and as a matter of fact, now that I think of it.. I made a DVD of the timeline for client approval....and that particular Motion file was missing media, (checker board pattern) which I noticed as I viewed the DVD. Should I delete the Motion files too? Those I can recreate easyily enough. I read the article on your site by Scott Barbour.....my media is all on a separate drive, so I've tried to open the project without the media.... I deleted the render files and deleted the stock footage clips (these were actually on the Mac hard drive)...with the same result, general error 41. I looked in the auto save vault....apparently I've turned this preference off a while ago...(I'll be turning it back on) the last saved project was from October.....it did open though. I DID back up this project a while ago onto the separate drive...too long ago...it opens normally but the edit is from weeks ago and doesn't contain all the hard work I put into this just last week. I will certainly build my routine now to include backing up after every session on the separate drive. Do you know about these 'general errors'? Is there a Mac site or somthing that has a list of them? Reply Quote Re: Final Cut project file won't open: General error 41 message (November 14, 2008 12:05AM) sbeisen You h
