Gigs are full of a lot of things other than cached files, so the actual number is even a bit smaller. The only thing that you can do to prevent the error is actually to use less memory. Thankfully, here are a bunch of tips on how to do that. 1) NEVER edit in h.264 or any other compressed format. It will add a little bit of transcoding time to the beginning, but it will prevent a lot of rendering and rerendering once in the edit. 2) Make your sequence settings (ideally) prores, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHGaQ_nv9UY and make sure that all of your footage is transcoded to the same flavor of prores (LT, HQ, 4444, whatever) This applies to framerate as well! 3) Ensure that your audio is aiff (not mp3) and at the same settings as your timeline. 4) Resize all stills to rough video sizes. 30,000 pixel wide files will bog down fcp immediately so crop or scale it down to something closer to your timeline http://blog.youdownwithfcp.com/2012/07/17/how-to-fix-out-of-memory-error-in-final-cut-pro-7/ resolution. If photoshop does this once, then fcp doesn't need to do it a million times. 5) Flat stills are easier than layered files. FCP doesn't have to deal with the precomp that psds or layered tiffs come in as. 6) Close unneeded tabs in the timeline and canvas. So that's basically it. Pre-process your footage to be 100% the same as your timeline and work with as few sequences open as possible. In my experience it seems that once things start erroring there is very little that helps outside of a restart. ~ by ross on July 17, 2012. I keep coming up against that wretched message all the time even when using ProRes… Then again I've been working on some pretty hefty HD projects recently. Have found that if you get the message, flushing some render files using Tools->Render Manager can free up enough memory to get you going again. It's only a temporary fix since the cache will fill up again but it keeps you going when the deadline looms. J John Weeks said this on July 24, 2012 at 4:01 am I am editing a LONG
5870 Graphics Card! While rendering a project in Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP) http://gogo6969.com/2010/09/21/apple-final-cut-pro-general-error-out-of-memory-solved/ I've got an error message… "General Error!" and then "Out of Memory!" ***WTF???*** Equipped with a brand new machine, I thought there must be another problem and did some research, http://www.kenstone.net/discussions/read.php?3,29977,29980 but found nothing really helpful. In fact the the solution is really simple! I had the following sequence setting, when I first tried to render and the following error message came final cut up: Wrong setting: SOLUTION: I've changed the setting a little bit: H.264 to "Apple ProRes 422" - and that's it!!! Right setting: THAT'S ALL! If you want to know which ProRes codec is the best for your project, please have a look at http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio And if you don't know how to change the video settings of a sequence: Right click on final cut pro it and choose "Settings"! That's easy… ;-) If you want to see a pretty fast RAID 0 with 4 SSDs, please click on this link: http://gogo6969.com/2012/01/18/1770-mbs-mbps/ Related posts: ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB ... my Power PC 2.7 GHz mac (OSX 10.5.8, with 2 GB DDR SD RAM) I've been editing a bunch of little movies and exporting using compressor to make a DVD the last couple weeks. Seemingly out of the blue, when I'm trying to edit a sequence with just a few clips from my flip camera, I get a general error window, and then "Error: Out of Memory". I have been using FCP independently but professionally for 5 years so I'm not entirely ignorant, but I am stumped. I have edited feature films on FCP with no problem like this. Some basic info that might help pinpoint the issue: There's 18 GB on my Scratch drive (which is also my operating system drive). No other programs running. Very pared down fcp project, and only one project open. At the moment the format of video I'm working with is MP4 1280x720 29.97 H.264 (though never had a problem with this before, and I have also gotten the error message with other "smaller" formats) my media is on the same drive as my project file. I've restarted. I've trashed my preferences to reset fcp to original. I did recently update my OS to 10.5.8, though that was a month ago. So I've edited for weeks without trouble since any kind of updates to my computer system. as the website said, I did latest fcp updates (today after I was having problems. I might have been at 6.0.5 before today, when the problem first occurred, not sure. But problem is the same with what I have now listed above). I read something about memory leaks. (So I trashed safari cache which was mentioned as a possible problem on another site). nothing has helped. Do you think a memory leak could be happening? How can I test for that? Or is my computer I bought new in 2005 going kaput? Or do you know about a compatibility issue that might make this happen? Thank you so much for any help you can give. I don't have money for another computer, so I hope you know of a fix. Reply Quote Re: General Error. Convert so the new video file will match your FCP Sequence settings. H.264 is NOT an editing codec - it is designed to be a final delivery codec. Editing h.264 is very, very processor intensive due to the extremel
