.MOV and .MP4 files. I have converted both sets of files (using MPEG Streamclip) with the same conversion settings,

but I am having different results; the .MOV files import/view/edit as you would expect, however, the .MP4 files do not. When I try to preview one of the .MP4 files I get

a "General Error" followed by "Error: Out of Memory" Note: All render/project directories are set to my external 2TB G-Drive (which has over 1TB of free space) and my network account is (almost) completely empty. I tried to re-transcode the ten .MP4 files using MPEG Streamclip (again) and noticed that the process happens almost instantaneously, which I'm sure it is not supposed to. final cut pro error out of memory Does anybody have any ideas what is happening or why? I'm working to a deadline and this is driving me insane.Return to posts indexReport Post •Re: [FCP7] "General Error" when importing and trying to view/edit .mp4by Shane Ross on May 21, 2012 at 1:51:35 pmFCP doesn't work with mp4 files. Not at all. And it doesn't just work with any old QuickTime .MOV file you throw in there. It needs to be as specific format of .MOV. A specific codec. .MOV is a container that can be one of a dozen codecs. It needs to be an editing codec. For the list of the ones that work in FCP you look in the Easy Setup list. If you want an editing app that works with any QuickTime file you throw at it, you need to look at Adobe Premiere. Options for converting. If the footage is Standard Definition, then convert to DV/NTSC or DV/50. If it is High Definition, then use ProRes. Maybe not always, but this should be the first place to check.General Errors most often relate to render problems; either when you are rendering directly during editing, or rendering as part of an export. While https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1159164 there isn't a fast way to fix this, it can be fixed. Before you attempt to fix a General Error, it doesn't hurt to reset your system by doing a Safe Boot.NOTE: Here's an article that explains how to do a Safe Boot: Trouble-Shoot in Five StepsTHINGS TO CHECK1. While Final Cut SHOULD be able to work with video of different frame rates, it can often have problems when a clip with a faster frame rate https://larryjordan.com/articles/fcp7-general-error/ (say, 30 fps) is put into a slower sequence (say, 23.98 fps). Disable clips with different frame rates and see if the General Error goes away when you render.NOTE: To disable a clip, select it and type Control+B. A clip changes color when it is disabled.2. It is possible that a specific render file became corrupted. This isn't your fault, every so often it just happens. Delete all render files and see if the error goes away.NOTE: To delete all render files associated with a track, turn off the green visibility light, located in the track header on the left of the Timeline, then turn it back on. This is just a quick click - click. If you don't turn the visibility light back on, all clips in that track become invisible.3. Sometimes clips downloaded from stock image houses are corrupted during the transfer. Disable any stock shots (select the clip and type Control+B) and re-render.4. If these first three suggestions don't work, you will need to get a bit more methodical by rendering your project in sections until you finally isolate the clip(s) that is causing a problem. To render just a portion of your sequence, select roughly 10% of your clips and render. If that works, SAVE YOUR PROJECT, then render the next 10%. (Saving your project allows you keep the render files that you've create

It doesn’t happen enough for me to ever remember exactly what causes it. It could be several things but usually it’s because of a piece of corrupted media. Here are the steps I take when trying to tackle the Final Cut Pro General Error. See if it is happening during a render. To be safe clear out the Render Cache. Do this by going to Tools-> Render Manager. Find your sequence and check Remove next to your audio and vide
